Spain & Portugal Road Trip: Lisbon to Barcelona in 11 Days

This is my tested route for driving from Lisbon to Barcelona, hitting the highlights of southern Spain without backtracking. I’ve done this trip and refined the routing so you don’t waste time.

Who This Itinerary Is For

  • First-time visitors to Spain/Portugal who want variety (cities + coast + countryside)
  • Travelers comfortable with driving in Europe
  • People who want flexibility but don’t want to plan from scratch

Total driving: ~17 hours spread across 11 days Best time: Spring (Apr-May) or Fall (Sep-Oct) - avoid August heat

Day 1-2: Lisbon

Where to stay: Near Rossio Square (central, walkable to everything)

Day 1 intensity: Medium-high (lots of hills) Transport: Walking only

Day 2: Belem District

TimeActivityDurationNotes
9:00Tram to Belem30 minTake Tram 15E from Praça do Comércio
9:30Jeronimos Monastery1.5hArrive early - lines get brutal by 11am

11:30Belem Tower45 minPhoto stop, interior optional
12:30Discovery Monument30 minWalk along waterfront
14:00Return to city center-Rest before evening

Ingrid’s take: Belem is a half-day. Don’t stretch it to a full day - you’ll get bored.

Day 3: Lisbon → Seville (Flight)

Flight: TAP TP1106, 7:25am - 9:30am (1h flight vs 4.5h drive)

I recommend flying this leg - the drive through Alentejo is beautiful but empty. Save your driving energy for the scenic routes ahead.

Afternoon: Seville Orientation

TimeActivityDurationNotes
14:00Check in (Old Town)-Stay near cathedral
15:00Plaza del Cabildo30 minHidden gem, beautiful tiles
15:30Muelle de la Sal30 minRiver walk
16:00Cathedral + Giralda + Alcazar3hBook combined tour in advance
19:30Walk to Triana (C. Betis)30 minCross the bridge for dinner views
21:00Flamenco at Teatro Flamenco Sevilla1.5hBook ahead - worth every euro

Critical booking: Cathedral/Alcazar combo tour. Do NOT show up without tickets - the line is 2+ hours.

Day 4: Seville → Ronda

Pick up rental car at Seville Rail Station Drive time: 1h 45min Route: A-376 through white villages

Ronda: The Cliffside Town

Ronda is small - 3-4 hours is enough to see everything.

Best photo spot: From below the bridge. Walk down past Mirador de los Viajeros Romanticos, turn right. Dirt path, 10 min walk. Worth it.

Parking: Hotel Colon has arrangement with Parking La Merced - 12 EUR/24h. Get ticket stamped at hotel.

Day 5: Ronda → Caminito del Rey → Granada Area

Morning: Caminito del Rey

This is the highlight of the trip for many people.

Day 6: Malaga → Valencia

This is a long driving day (6h 20min). Leave early.

Quick Malaga Stop (2-3 hours)

If you want to break up the drive:

Quick hitsTimeWorth it?
Alcazaba1.5hYes - Moorish fortress with views
Central Market30 minGood for breakfast/snacks
CathedralSkipUnless you love cathedrals
Picasso Museum1.5hOnly if you’re a fan

My recommendation: Skip Malaga if you’re tired. It’s a nice city but not essential for this trip. Drive straight to Valencia and arrive with energy to explore.

Valencia Evening

Stay: Near old town (El Carmen area) Parking: San Agustin Street garage - show hotel booking for 17 EUR/24h rate

EveningActivity
18:00Walk Plaza de la Virgen
18:30Valencia Cathedral + El Micalet tower (city views)

21:00Dinner in El Carmen

Day 7: Valencia → Barcelona

Drive: 3.5 hours on AP-7 Arrive: Early afternoon

Barcelona Days 7-9

Barcelona deserves 3 full days. Here’s how to organize it without backtracking:

Day 7 (Arrival): Gothic Quarter + Ramblas

TimeActivityArea
15:00Check inStay near Placa Catalunya
16:00Walk La RamblaOld town
16:30Boqueria MarketRamblas
17:30Gothic QuarterOld town
20:00Dinner in El BornOld town

Stay: Near Placa Catalunya - it’s the center point for all Barcelona neighborhoods.

Day 8: Gaudi Day

Book all Gaudi sites in advance - they sell out

12:30Lunch near park1h-
14:00Tibidabo (optional)2hSkip if tired
16:00Casa Batllo1hPre-book
17:30Casa Mila1hPre-book

Routing logic: Park Guell is uphill and north. Do it first, then work your way south along Passeig de Gracia where Casa Batllo and Casa Mila are located.

Day 9: Sagrada Familia + Beach

TimeActivityNotes
9:00Sagrada FamiliaFirst entry slot - book months ahead
11:30Walk to Barceloneta25 min walk or metro
12:00Beach timeRelax before flight
14:00Seafood lunch in Barceloneta-

Sagrada Familia tip: The 9am slot is the best. Fewer crowds, better light for photos inside.

Day 10-11: Barcelona or Return

Depending on your flight:

  • Morning flight: Head to airport
  • Afternoon flight: Montjuic hill or shopping on Passeig de Gracia

What I’d Do Differently

After doing this trip:

  1. Skip Malaga - Nice city, but adds driving fatigue without essential experiences
  2. Add a night in Ronda - I rushed it, but it deserves more time
  3. Book Sagrada Familia first - It sells out fastest, plan trip around this booking

Practical Tips

Driving in Spain

  • Highways are tolled (budget 30-50 EUR for this route)
  • Gas stations less frequent in rural areas - don’t let tank go below 1/4
  • Rental car pickup at train stations is easier than airports

Parking

  • Historic centers are mostly pedestrian - park outside and walk
  • Hotel parking arrangements usually save money vs. public garages

Booking Priority (Do These First)

  1. Sagrada Familia (months ahead)
  2. Caminito del Rey (weeks ahead)
  3. Seville Cathedral/Alcazar combo (days ahead)
  4. Park Guell (days ahead)
  5. Flamenco show (day before is usually fine)
