Prague & Vienna 9-Day Itinerary: Central European Gems

Two of Europe’s most beautiful cities connected by stunning countryside. This route gives you the best of Bohemian and Habsburg history, world-class music, and incredible cafe culture.

Route Overview

Prague (4 days) → Cesky Krumlov (day trip) → Vienna (4 days)

Day 1: Arrive in Prague

Morning: Arrive and settle in

Breakfast: Cafe Imperial - Stunning Art Deco interior

  • Na Poříčí 1072/15, Prague 1

Afternoon:

  • Walk across Charles Bridge (go early or late to avoid crowds)
  • Explore Lesser Town (Mala Strana)
  • Take the tram up to Prague Castle area

Evening:

  • Dinner in Mala Strana
  • Night walk along the illuminated Vltava River

Day 2: Prague Castle & Old Town

Morning (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM):

  • Prague Castle complex - Buy B ticket (CZK 250)
    • St. Vitus Cathedral - Gothic masterpiece
    • St. George’s Basilica
    • Golden Lane - Tiny colorful houses

Lunch: Near castle or walk down to Old Town

Afternoon:

  • Old Town Square - Astronomical Clock (shows every hour)
  • Jewish Quarter (Josefov) - Synagogues and cemetery
  • Shopping on Pařížská Street

Evening:

  • Vltava River cruise - Pre-book for sunset
  • Traditional Czech dinner (svíčková, trdelník for dessert)

Day 3: Day Trip to Cesky Krumlov

Morning (9:00 AM):

  • CK Shuttle bus from Prague (~3 hours)
  • Book ahead: ck-shuttle.cz

In Cesky Krumlov:

  • Castle - Second largest in Czech Republic
  • Wander the UNESCO old town
  • Lunch at a riverside restaurant
  • Float down the river in summer (tube rentals available)

Evening: Return to Prague

Day 4: Prague Hidden Gems

Morning:

  • Petřín Hill - Funicular up, views over the city
  • Strahov Monastery - Beautiful library halls
  • Lennon Wall - Colorful graffiti tribute

Afternoon:

  • Dancing House - Frank Gehry’s quirky building
  • Local beer halls - Try Pilsner at the source
  • Vintage shopping in Vinohrady

Evening:

  • Classical concert (many options nightly)
  • Last dinner in Prague

Day 5: Prague → Vienna

Morning: Train to Vienna (~4 hours)

  • Book on Czech Railways or Austrian ÖBB

Afternoon: Arrive Vienna, check in

First exploration:

  • Walk down Ringstrasse - The grand boulevard
  • St. Stephen’s Cathedral - Climb the tower
  • Coffee at a traditional Viennese cafe

Evening: Dinner in the historic center

Day 6: Imperial Vienna

Morning:

  • Schönbrunn Palace (opens 8:30 AM)
    • Book tickets online
    • Walk the gardens (free)
    • Climb the Gloriette for views

Lunch: Near Schönbrunn or Naschmarkt

Afternoon:

  • Naschmarkt - Vienna’s famous market
  • Secession Building - Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze
  • Karlskirche - Baroque church with dome views

Evening:

  • Musikverein (Golden Hall) - Book concert in advance!
  • Or Vienna State Opera (standing tickets are cheap)

Day 7: Art & Culture Day

Morning:

  • Kunsthistorisches Museum - World-class art collection
  • Or Belvedere Palace - Klimt’s “The Kiss”

Lunch: Traditional Viennese schnitzel

Afternoon:

  • Hofburg Palace - Imperial apartments, Sisi Museum
  • Spanish Riding School - Morning exercise if available
  • Walk through Graben and Kohlmarkt shopping streets

Evening:

  • Heuriger (wine tavern) in Grinzing
  • Traditional Viennese dinner

Day 8: Vienna Neighborhoods

Morning:

  • MuseumsQuartier - Contemporary art
  • Or Freud Museum for history buffs
  • Coffee house hopping (Café Central, Café Sperl)

Afternoon:

  • Prater - Ride the historic Ferris wheel
  • Or day trip to Wachau Valley wine region

Evening:

  • Last concert opportunity
  • Farewell dinner with Sachertorte

Day 9: Departure

Morning:

  • Final strudel and melange coffee
  • Head to Vienna Airport
