Norway Fjords Cruise: Complete Port-by-Port Guide

Norway fjord cruises are bucket-list trips for good reason - the scenery is genuinely stunning. But the ports are small and options are limited. Here’s exactly what to do at each stop.

Typical Norway Fjords Itinerary

Most cruises from Amsterdam follow this pattern:

DayPortHoursType
1AmsterdamDepart PMEmbarkation
2At Sea-Sea day
3Eidfjord7am-3pmTender
4Alesund8am-5pmDocked
5Geiranger7am-6pmTender
6Nordfjordeid7am-2pmTender
7At Sea-Scenic cruising
8AmsterdamArrive AMDisembarkation

Key insight: The scenic cruising (Hardangerfjord, Geirangerfjord, Nordfjord) is often better than the ports themselves. Plan to be on deck, not onshore.

Don’t rush to the ship. Amsterdam deserves time.

Port 1: Eidfjord

Time in port: 7am - 3pm (8 hours) Tender port: Yes - allow extra time

The Reality

Eidfjord is tiny. The village itself takes 30 minutes to walk through. The value is in the excursions.

Your Options

OptionTimeCostWorth It?
Voringfossen Waterfall2-3hShip excursion or taxiYes - spectacular
Hardangervidda Nature Center1.5hWalk from tenderNice, not essential
Village walk30minFreeQuick

My recommendation: Book the Voringfossen waterfall excursion at the visitor center immediately after tendering. The waterfall is one of Norway’s most impressive, but it’s a 30-minute drive from the village.

If You Skip the Excursion

ActivityTimeNotes
Walk to Nature Center1hExhibits on local plateau
Explore village30minVery small
Have Norwegian waffles30minLocal specialty
Return to ship-Watch scenic cruising from deck

Honest take: Without the waterfall excursion, Eidfjord is underwhelming. Consider staying onboard and enjoying Hardangerfjord scenic cruising from the deck - it’s beautiful.

Port 2: Alesund

Time in port: 8am - 5pm (9 hours) Docked: Yes - walk right off

Why Alesund Is Special

Alesund was rebuilt entirely in Art Nouveau style after a fire in 1904. The architecture is unlike anywhere else in Norway.

The Must-Do: Aksla Viewpoint

This is the one essential activity.

Ship Excursion vs. DIY

DIY wins here. Alesund is walkable and the main attraction (Aksla) is free and self-guided. Ship excursions to Atlantic Road or Geirangerfjord are expensive and you’ll see Geirangerfjord from the ship anyway.

Port 3: Geiranger

Time in port: 7am - 6pm (11 hours) Tender port: Yes

Why This Is the Highlight

Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage site and arguably the most famous fjord in the world. The sail-in alone is worth the entire cruise.

Critical tip: Be on deck at 6am for the fjord approach. Don’t oversleep this.

Your Options

OptionTimeCostMy Take
Eagles Road + Dalsnibba viewpoint4hShip excursionBest option - 1,500m elevation views
Kayaking the fjord3hModerateGreat for active travelers
Waterfall hike2-3hFreeGood if fit
Village walk1hFreePretty but small

If You Do One Excursion This Cruise

Do the Eagles Road + Dalsnibba excursion in Geiranger. The hairpin bends are thrilling and the viewpoint at 1,500m is unforgettable. You see the entire fjord from above.

DIY in Geiranger

TimeActivity
8:00Tender to shore
8:30Walk up to waterfall viewpoint (Flydalsjuvet)
10:00Explore village, Norwegian Fjord Centre
12:00Lunch
13:00Rent bikes or hike Storseterfossen trail
16:00Return to ship

Honest assessment: Geiranger village itself is touristy - lots of souvenir shops. The value is in the excursions and the fjord views, not the village.

Port 4: Nordfjordeid

Time in port: 7am - 2pm (7 hours) Tender port: Yes

The Hidden Gem

Nordfjordeid is often passengers’ favorite port - it’s quiet, authentic, and less touristed.

Key insight: Be back on the ship for the Nordfjord scenic cruising. The views from the deck are exceptional.

Scenic Cruising: The Real Star

On Norway cruises, the sailing itself is often better than the ports.

Must-See Scenic Passages

PassageWhenDeck Location
HardangerfjordDay 3 afternoonPort side
Geirangerfjord approachDay 5 early morningBow
Seven Sisters waterfallDay 5 morningPort side
NordfjordDay 6 afternoonBoth sides

Pro tips:

  • Set phone alarms for scenic cruising times
  • Get to deck 20-30 minutes early for good spots
  • Morning passages can be cold - bring layers

What to Pack for Norway

ItemWhy
Warm layersEven summer mornings are cold
Waterproof jacketRain is common
Good walking shoesSteep paths at ports
BinocularsWaterfalls, wildlife
Camera with good zoomScenery from deck

Clothing tip: Dress in layers. Norwegian ports can be 10-15°C (50-60°F) even in summer, but ship interiors are warm.

Post-Cruise: Amsterdam

If you have time after disembarkation:

Half-Day Options

OptionWhatTime Needed
Zaanse SchansWindmill village3-4 hours
Hague + RotterdamDay tripFull day (car needed)
Anne Frank HouseMuseum2 hours (pre-book!)

Zaanse Schans: Classic Dutch windmills, 30 min from Amsterdam. Touristy but beautiful.

Final Tips

  1. The cruise matters more than the ports - Norway cruises are about the sailing, not port shopping
  2. Weather is unpredictable - Bring layers regardless of season
  3. Book key excursions early - Dalsnibba and Voringfossen sell out
  4. Skip the expensive ship excursions in Alesund - It’s walkable
  5. Be on deck for scenic cruising - Set alarms, don’t sleep in
