Quick Take

A boutique cruise experience. No Oasis Class crowds, but unique itineraries and a more intimate atmosphere.

Why Choose a Smaller Ship?

Royal Caribbean’s mega-ships (Oasis/Icon Class) are impressive, but smaller ships like Serenade offer unique advantages:

Unique Itineraries

Serenade’s biggest advantage is itineraries. Because it’s smaller, it can go where big ships can’t:

Alaska

  • Deep into fjords - Smaller ports big ships can’t access
  • Wildlife - Closer observation opportunities
  • Glacier cruising - More immersive experience

Panama Canal

  • Full transit - Small ships can use the old locks
  • Historic route - Authentic canal experience

South America/Antarctica Gateway

  • Chilean fjords - Spectacular natural scenery
  • Falkland Islands - Penguins!
  • Ushuaia - End of the world

Europe In-Depth

  • Norwegian fjords - Deep into small villages
  • Baltic Sea - Classic Nordic itinerary
  • Mediterranean - Avoid tourist crowds

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Unique itineraries - Goes where big ships can’t
  • Uncrowded - No queuing
  • Personal service - Crew gets to know you
  • Glass design - Great natural light, ocean views
  • Reasonable prices - Usually cheaper than mega-ships

Cons

  • Limited amenities - No FlowRider, slides, etc.
  • Older ship - 2003, renovated but shows age
  • Less entertainment - Shows smaller scale than mega-ships
  • Fewer kids facilities - Not ideal for young children

Ingrid’s Take

Serenade is my recommendation for “cruise veterans.”

If you’ve already experienced Oasis Class and the mega-ship thrill, and want something different — Serenade’s Alaska, South America, or European deep itineraries will give you a completely different feeling.

It doesn’t impress with amenities; it moves you with itineraries and atmosphere.

My advice:

  • First cruise? Choose a big ship (Harmony/Symphony)
  • Seeking deep exploration? Choose Serenade’s specialty itineraries
  • Want to avoid crowds? Serenade is absolutely peaceful
