Best For

Traveler TypeRatingReason
First-Time Cruisers⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Complete amenities, friendly prices
Families⭐⭐⭐⭐Water park, rock climbing, activities
Couples⭐⭐⭐Good, but not the most romantic choice
Thrill Seekers⭐⭐2006 ship, amenities show their age
Budget Travelers⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Usually 20-30% cheaper than newer ships

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Price advantage - Significantly cheaper than Oasis Class on same routes
  • Complete amenities - FlowRider, rock climbing, ice rink all included
  • Manageable size - Not too overwhelming to navigate
  • Rich itineraries - Caribbean short cruise workhorse

Cons

  • Dated amenities - Launched 2006, shows age despite refurbishments
  • No Bionic Bar - Missing high-tech elements from Quantum Class and above
  • Smaller cabins - Especially suites, not as spacious as newer ships
  • Limited entertainment - No Broadway-caliber shows

Common Itineraries

  • Miami departures - 3-4 night Bahamas short cruises
  • San Juan departures - 7-night Southern Caribbean
  • Seasonal - Occasional Alaska or Europe repositioning

Ingrid’s Take

Freedom of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s “value choice.” If you’re a first-time cruiser, on a budget, or just want a quick ocean getaway, it delivers everything you need.

But if you’re after the latest amenities, biggest ships, and most impressive experiences, look at Oasis Class or Icon Class instead.

My advice: Perfect for 4-night or shorter cruises. For 7+ nights, consider upgrading to a newer ship.
